Kapitan Keling Mosque - Oldest in Penang

Add: Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, George Town, Penang
Tel: +604 262 0202

I was driving about when I stopped at the side of road to get a closer look at this beautiful masjid (mosque).

Review from www.wcities.com
Located at the busy junction of Chulia Street and Pitt Street, Kapitan Keling's spacious gardens are an ideal spot to watch the world go by. Crowned by yellow domes and minarets, it is the largest historic mosque in town; it was founded in 1801 by an Indian Muslim merchant, Cauder Mydin Merican.
Originally it was a rectangular building with verandas and a hipped roof and has been enlarged several times. British architects commissioned by the Muslim and Hindu Endowments Board gave the mosque its British Moghul Revival appearance in 1916. Permission to enter must be obtained from the mosque officials.
